My employer said that all contract language is standard and cannot be changed, should I still have my contract reviewed?
Yes - almost all employers, health systems, or private practices will make changes to their contracts. We see employers modify contracts in two main areas: compensation (to effectively and successfully recruit you) and "legal language" such as restrictive covenant stipulations, tail coverage, etc.
Can you review more than one contract?
For the Attorney Contract Review packages, we only review one offer or contract at a time. So if you have 3 offers, we recommend that you choose the offer that feels best for you and we’re happy review that contract. Your customized DocPay compensation report should be helpful to negotiate with all potential employers and therefore should provide more clarity as to which offer to pursue and finalize.
What do I need to look out for in a private practice employment agreement or if my employer is backed by private equity?
There are a few additional complexities with private practice or private equity backed medical groups. But don’t worry; we have seen them all. Your customized DocPay compensation report will be able to arm you with appropriate benchmark and market data to negotiate, but it would be beneficial to also include a Attorney Contract Review package to understand any ownership provisions, how they are earned, what happens if you leave, and what happens if there is a subsequent transaction.
Do you work with Advanced Practice Providers (PA/NP/CRNA)?
Yes. With APPs more in demand than ever, using DocPay to help negotiate a higher salary is key. While in the past, most APP contracts were straightforward consisting only of a base salary more often APPs now have production requirements, bonus opportunities, and quality responsibilities- all of which can be negotiated to try and achieve a higher total compensation package.
Why should I work with a compensation expert and have my contract reviewed?
Physician compensation is complex often having multiple components (base salary, production, quality, teaching or admin time) and it is important for physicians to have a firm grasp on how to use benchmark and market data to their advantage - your employer certainly does. Also, "the contract doesn't matter, until it's all that matters." Your employer had its legal team draft and review the contract you're about to sign, you should too.
Do you review the offer letter or term sheet?
Yes – we include a review of a letter of intent or term sheet at no additional cost (if you select the attorney review package). Some letters of intent or term sheets do have binding sections, meaning you agree to those terms when you sign and can’t further negotiate -which is why we recommend reviewing all documents with our attorney at Doc Pay first.
